Component Out of Pocket (COOP) events, Jammed Component In Pocket (JCIP) events, components being crushed in packaging or broken during transit due to improperly sized pockets in chip trays and waffle pack assemblies, leading to foreign object debris (FOD) generation are costly failures in microelectronics manufacturing. Millions of dollars per year in scrap, rework, equipment damage, wasted resources and time, as well as program delays occur; these in-process failures may seem like coincidence or random occurrence but can be traced back to improper packaging selection. Process engineers and factory managers tasked with resolving these problems as they arise can obviate downstream disruptions and waste by early-stage planning within each organization, promulgating specific supplier packaging requirements for this purpose.

For the microelectronics industry, Forgione provides standardized FOD detection, ESD Packaging, custom waffle packs, critical component protective packaging, rework, surface prep, fixtures, tools, and solvent cleaning products. Mr. Forgione has also worked as a Visiting Faculty Teaching Professor at the University of Massachusetts Lowell in the Mechanical Engineering Department since 2020. Katherine Kutina is an R&D and Aerospace Engineer at Forgione Engineering in Lowell, MA. An integral part of APQP (Advanced Product Quality Planning) during new product introduction is PPAP (Production Part Approval Process). PPAP is a structured methodology that demonstrates the manufacturer’s ability to consistently meet all customer requirements and readiness for scalable production.
For organizations like SFO Technologies, operating primarily in aerospace, defence, and medical electronics, PPAP requirements are highly stringent due to the critical nature of these applications. These products involve multiple controlled processes such as SMT, THT, cleaning, conformal coating, and other special processes, all of which must be validated and documented thoroughly.

In addition to standard requirements, customers may define application-specific expectations, which must also be addressed. Successful compliance is achieved through robust project planning and disciplined execution.

A key success factor is requirement definition and analysis, which ensures clear identification of customer needs, including Key Characteristics (KC) and CTQs (Critical to Quality parameters).
