Compatibility of Conformal Coatings & No-Clean Flux Residues

Presentation by Mario Scalzo, Indium Corporation

As the march of time progresses, there have been advances in both the miniaturization and complexity of surface mount technology. Two of the most advanced of these are the move towards ruggedization of electronics requiring a high resistance to moisture, debris & reactive chemicals, and the components which are used in this becoming smaller, leadless and low or no stand-off. Traditionally, the easiest way to combine these two movements was to use a solder paste residue that was easy to remove; an organic-based water washable formulation, but the latter technology of low or no stand-off components precludes the use of a highly active water washable formula because the flux residues are required to be removed, and with the component lying on the printed circuit board (PCB) after soldering, it has effectively sealed itself against the solder mask, and residue removal is impossible.

The resulting conundrum is how to get an electronics product that are both electrically and environmentally reliable. Enter the world of conformal coating over no-clean flux residues. This presentation will focus on the supplier / customer work that has been done to prove that this is not only a viable process, but one that yields electrically reliable electronics that have proven themselves in the field.

Speaker Bio

Mario Scalzo is a Senior Technical Support Engineer for Indium Corporation and is located at their global headquarters, in Clinton, NY.

Mario supports all of Indium’s current product lines, with emphasis on advanced surface mount (SMT) problem solving. He has worked closely with the Asian & North American regional teams on several customer projects, including a long-term assignment with Indium’s Asia-Pacific Operations in Singapore.

Mario joined Indium in 2000 as a Quality Flux Technician, and spent 2 years as a Quality Engineer. This troubleshooting experience has given him a depth-of-knowledge beyond the normal product training and taught him how to anticipate customer concerns.

Mario is active in several industry organizations, including the Surface Mount Technology Association (SMTA) and the American Chemical Society (ACS). He has presented at several conferences nationally and internationally.

Mario has a bachelor’s in chemistry from Saint Anselm College, with a certificate from the American Chemical Society for Professional Education and minors in Physics and Fine Art. He is an SMTA certified SMT Process Engineer, an IPC A-600/610 Certified Inspection Specialist and has earned his Six Sigma Black Belt from Dartmouth College’s Thayer School of Engineering.

Presentation #1

Room Temperature Stable Solder Pastes

The drives for cost reduction and lean manufacturing have push material suppliers and end users to continually improve their products and processes. This presentation will review features, benefits and overall cost savings of using temperature stable Pb-free no-clean solder pastes. These features and benefits include improved printing, improved stability, wider reflow performance and improved inventory management.

Presentation #2

Conformal Coatings and their Interactions with Flux Residues and other Contaminates

The demands on electric assembly materials continue to increase. Technical and regulatory compliance requirements drive the need to develop new materials. Understanding the chemical interaction between common SMT chemistries is key. This presentation will examine the interaction between conformal coatings with flux residues and other contaminates.
