SMTA Atlanta Chapter June Meeting

 PCB Materials Panel Discussion

Thursday, June 1, 2017

ASM Systems

3975 Lakefield Court

Suite 106

Suwannee GA 30024

 Panelist / Speaker

John Fatcheric COO Oak-Mitsui

Oak-Mitsui is a high quality manufacturer of electrodeposited copper foil primarily for copper clad laminate, printed circuit boards, lithium ion batteries and other specialty applications.  Oak-Mitsui is currently the only active US manufacturer.

Starting out as a chemical process engineer, John has worked in a variety of technical, operations and general management roles.  John is a seasoned executive with 30+ years in electronics industry with the majority of his career spent in copper foil & copper clad laminates manufacturing.

The PCB Materials Panel discussion will focus on availability, performance, processing and design using today's advanced laminates and foil systems. A recent EIPC Winter Conference in Salzburg, Austria included a panel discussion on this very important topic, addressing the availability of materials and supplies needed to produce the laminates and substrates used to build printed circuit boards.

The report from the EIPC Winter Conference stated:

In response to growing concern from members about cost increases and potential availability restrictions affecting copper-clad laminate and prepreg supplies, the EIPC 2017 Winter Conference in Salzburg included a special panel discussion on critical issues facing the raw materials supply chain for the PCB industry worldwide, particularly the availability of copper foil as a consequence of rapidly increasing demand from the manufacturers of lithium batteries for electric vehicles.

Companies participating in the panel discussion on this very important and critical topic include Aismalibar, Isola, Oak-Mitsui and Ventec.

Student Scholarship Program

Organization and Guidelines:

The Atlanta SMTA Chapter announces an annual student scholarship program that is to be awarded to undergraduate and graduate-level college students.

To qualify, eligible students must be either:

A) Members or children of members of the Atlanta SMTA Chapter, OR

B) Local students (state of Georgia) majoring in a program of study related to the electronics industry, with a minimum GPA of 3.0. The preferred courses of study are to be in engineering, technology, or an electronics related discipline. Majors outside these fields will also be given consideration based on the credentials of the applicant. The scholarship award has been established to encourage and aid students in pursuing careers in fields that are in, or are related to, the electronics industry.

Scholarships will be awarded and given directly to the financial aid departments of the selected student’s institutions, to be used to supplement the cost of their higher education. The number of awards and their amounts will be determined by the scholarship committee each year.

We will be awarding several scholarships this year. Our top scholarship award, the Atlanta SMTA Scholarship, is in memory of Ron Daniels, a long-time supporter and friend of the Atlanta SMTA Chapter.

The awards will be presented to the winning students at the Atlanta SMTA Expo, held April 19, 2017, at the Infinite Energy Center in Duluth, GA.

To be considered for the award, students will be required to submit the following:

  • An application
  • Major declared
  • A one-page description of their reason for choosing their course of study and why they should be considered to receive the award
  • A recent copy of their transcript
  • Advisor’s name and contact information
  • Total amount of student loans outstanding
  • Applications for consideration must be received by April 1, 2017.

The winning applicants will be notified prior to the Atlanta SMTA EXPO.

The scholarship committee will consider the following criteria in the selection process:

  • Fully completed entry materials
  • Academic credentials
  • Student’s financial need
  • Course of study
  • Type of SMTA membership (if any). In order of preference: Individual, Participating, Student.
