The SMTA has two great opportunities for students! Please help us spread the word and encourage qualifying students to apply. Applications must be received on or before Monday, April 17, 2017.

For graduate students:

$5000 Charles Hutchins Educational Grant

The SMTA and co-sponsor, Circuits Assembly magazine, are now accepting applications for the 20th annual Charles Hutchins Educational Grant, awarded to a full time graduate level-student working on thesis research in electronics assembly, packaging, or a related field.

To be eligible for the grant, applicants must be members of the SMTA (a student membership is only $20), be a full time student attending a university in North America, and have an expected degree completion date of April 1, 2018 or later. Click here to view the eligibility requirements and application for the Hutchins Grant.

The grant is intended for the purchase of technical books and research materials, for participation in conferences related to electronics assembly and packaging, and for living expenses if necessary.

For undergrads:

$3000 JoAnn Stromberg Leadership Scholarship

The $3000 JoAnn Stromberg Student Leadership Scholarship was created to encourage undergraduate students to take on more leadership opportunities and strengthen the connection between students and the electronics industry.

The Stromberg Scholarship is awarded annually to an undergraduate student pursuing a degree in electronics and actively involved in the SMTA. Click here to view the eligibility requirements and application for the Stromberg Scholarship.

The scholarship is intended for the purchase of technical books and research materials, for participation in conferences related to electronics assembly and packaging, and for living expenses if necessary.

Joint ASQ February 21 Meeting @ Adtran

What a great meeting last night!  Thanks to all who made it happen!

Special thanks to Adtran for letting us use thier facilities and cater our meal, ASQ for helping set up and co-sponsor the meeting, and to Jeffrey Gaddes for the wonderful presentation!

The 3D printer produced a small vase on-site.  It was very interesting to watch the vase being created as we had dinner and enjoyed the presentation.

Attached is Mr. Gaddes presentation, with pictures to follow:
http://www.smta.org/chapters/files/huntsville_Additive_Manufacturing_Overview.pdf

Speaker Info:

Mr. Jeffrey Gaddes is an engineer in the Manufacturing Science & Technology Division of the U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Research, Development, and Engineering Center (AMRDEC).  He currently supports Manufacturing Technology (ManTech) programs and promotes adoption of additive technologies at AMRDEC.  Mr. Gaddes has designed and evaluated both polymer and metal additive manufacturing equipment, and holds master and bachelor mechanical engineering degrees from Auburn University.

About the 3D printer:

There will be a demonstration of a Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) 3D printer.  While a relatively inexpensive technology, FDM 3D printers are ideal for demonstrating the additive manufacturing characteristics pervasive across different grades of equipment.  The demonstration will include manipulation of a 3D model, preparation for printing, and the material deposition process.
